Extends a private network across public networks. How? VPNs, or virtual private grids, create a remote network via the public network, the Internet, allowing small users to access a LAN securely without requiring true lines. Below is more information about private network connections.

Extends a Private Network Across Public Networks Connections

A VPN extends a private network across public network connections. One can make their VPN by using a software package such as OpenVPN, SSL, or L2TP. Also, a VPN allows remote users to access a private network even when the users are on a public network.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a network that extends across a public network, such as the Internet. So, the remote users can access a private network as if they were directly connected to it over dedicated lines.

Linksys L2TP Setup & Configuration

The Linksys L2TP Setup & Configuration provides instructions for Linksys routers with DSL modem configuration. Setup & configure Linksys router for L2TP protocol service for VPN connections.

Start with the Basic Setup Wizard to set up your Internet connection and your wireless network. If you want to enable Wireless-G VPN, you must set up the Router before you connect it to your DSL or cable modem.

Can I Access My Network Remotely?

Yes, you can access your network when you are on the VPN. Your computer will be a new IP address (through the DHCP server).

The default gateway for the VPN connection is the VPN server. Also, the private network IP addresses for your computers will be in the same subnet as used by the VPN server.

Steps

Connect the router to your DSL or cable modem. Plug the power adapter into a power source, then into the back of the router. So, the Power light will turn green when the router is ready to communicate with the computer.

Set up your Internet connection and wireless network settings. To set up your VPN connection, on the Main tab, under WAN, click Virtual Private Network (VPN), then click Add a new user-created VPN link.

Enter a name for your VPN connection in the Description field. Then select L2TP as the type of VPN connection you want to set up.

The Default Server Address is the address of the VPN server you want to use. You must set up the VPN server before doing this.

The Default Account Name is the account name used by the L2TP clients to connect to the L2TP server. It is recommended that you use the same account name as defined in your VPN server configuration.

Risks

VPNs allow remote users to access a private network securely. However, the VPN connection is as secure as the connected server. Also, if an unauthorized individual discovers your VPN password, they could access your private network and make use of the resources.

A packet sniffer is a software or hardware used to intercept packets on a network. A packet sniffer can be used by hackers to steal information from users. Also, packet sniffers are often used in conjunction with other tools that perform man-in-the-middle attacks.

A man-in-the-middle attack is a form of eavesdropping attack. In a man-in-the-middle attack, the attacker gets. Also, it is between a communication link, impersonates each end, and then relays messages between both ends.

Conclusion

VPNs provide a secure means of extending a private network across a public one. The Linksys L2TP VPN Server setup & configuration provide instructions for Linksys routers with DSL modem configuration.
